Joomla upgrade and migration
Joomla 3 and Joomla 4 no longer get security fixes. We move your site to a supported version, keep your design, content and search rankings, and tighten security while we are at it.
Is Joomla 4 still supported?
No. Joomla 4 stopped getting security fixes on 17 October 2025, and Joomla 3 in August 2023. Sites on either version should move to Joomla 5 or 6. Joomla 4 to 5 is an upgrade; Joomla 3 has to step through 4 first. Cyberstore upgrades Joomla sites starting from $675 + GST, with custom-coded sites quoted after an audit.
Is my Joomla site still safe?
If it runs Joomla 3 or Joomla 4, no. Both versions no longer get security fixes, so any new vulnerability stays open for good. Automated scanners look for these old versions constantly.
Joomla 5 is in maintenance mode and gets security fixes until 19 October 2027. Joomla 6 is the current version. Most Perth businesses we talk to are on Joomla 3 or 4 and did not know support had ended.
| Version | Security support ends | Status | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joomla 3 | August 2023 | No security fixes | Migration to 5 (two steps) |
| Joomla 4 | 17 October 2025 | No security fixes | Upgrade to 5 |
| Joomla 5 | 19 October 2027 | Maintenance mode | Plan the update to 6 |
| Joomla 6 | Current (released 14 October 2025) | Supported | Keep it updated |

// How we do it
How we upgrade a Joomla site
- 01
Audit
We list your Joomla version, template, every extension and any custom code, and check each one against the target version.
- 02
Plan
You get a fixed price and a list of what will be upgraded, replaced or rebuilt, before any work starts.
- 03
Upgrade a copy
We work on a private copy: core upgrade, extension updates or replacements, template fixes and content checks.
- 04
Test
Forms, menus, logins, search, SEO settings and page layouts are checked against the live site.
- 05
Go live
The upgraded site replaces the old one at a quiet time, with a full backup kept for rollback.
- 06
Harden
Admin accounts, permissions and security settings are tightened, and the PHP version is moved to a supported release.
Why Joomla people come to us
Cyberstore is the security practice of Joomstore Digital, a Perth Joomla agency since 2008. We have upgraded sites from Joomla 1.5 all the way through to 6, and we know the extensions that cause trouble.
We also look at security while we are in there: old admin accounts, abandoned extensions, file permissions and the PHP version. An upgrade is the best time to fix all of it at once.
Common Joomla problems we fix
- Joomla 3 template that will not run on 4 or 5
- Abandoned extensions with no update
- JCE editor and other extension hacks
- Broken menus or layouts after an update
- Host forcing a PHP upgrade the site cannot run on
// FAQ
Common questions
Is Joomla 4 still supported?
No. Joomla 4 stopped getting security fixes on 17 October 2025, and Joomla 3 stopped in August 2023. If your site runs either one, any new vulnerability found in it will never be patched.
Can I go straight from Joomla 3 to Joomla 5?
Not in one jump. Joomla 3 has to go to Joomla 4 first, then to 5. The Joomla 3 to 4 step is the hard one, because templates and many extensions from Joomla 3 do not work in 4 and need replacing or rebuilding.
Is moving from Joomla 5 to 6 an update or a migration?
It is an update, not a migration, as long as your extensions are ready for Joomla 6. We check every extension first, because one incompatible extension can stop the site loading.
Why are automatic Joomla updates a bad idea?
A percentage of updates always break something, usually an extension or a template override. On a live site with no backup and nobody watching, that becomes downtime. We back up, test on a copy and then update.
Will my website look different after the upgrade?
It does not have to. If your template can be upgraded, the site looks the same. If it was built for Joomla 3, we rebuild it to match your current design, or refresh the design if you want to.
How long does a Joomla upgrade take?
Joomla 5 to 6 is usually a day or two. Joomla 4 to 5 is two to four days. Joomla 3 to 5 depends on the template and extensions, and is often one to three weeks of elapsed time, mostly testing.
How much does a Joomla upgrade cost?
Prices start from $675 for Joomla 5 to 6, $1,275 for 4 to 5 and $2,750 for 3 to 5, all + GST, for sites using standard extensions. Sites with custom components or custom code are typically $3,750 or more, because each custom piece has to be rewritten and tested. We audit first and fix the price before we start.
We have been with Joomla since 2008. Do you know older sites?
Yes. Cyberstore is part of Joomstore Digital, which has been building and rescuing Joomla sites in Perth since 2008. Old, heavily customised Joomla sites are normal work for us.
